A round up of 2022 and what’s to come

In 2022, Switch attended six trade shows, five panel discussions, two testivals and three Plugfests. We have also hosted six ISO 15118 training sessions, six webinars and delivered three keynote presentations across five countries. Phew, it’s been a busy year for Switch!

Tests and continuous market exchange are essential to stress-test our software stack against the deployed infrastructure and all EVs, chargers and charging infrastructure yet to come to market. We deliberately decided to pave the way, push and challenge technological development and create the most powerful and seamless solution yet. Our entire software architecture is based on the latest protocols of ISO 15118-2/-20 and OCPP 2.0.1.

The Switch platform helps you to build better EV charging networks, with real market value that benefits you and your customers. It gives you a competitive advantage to take your business to the next level.

What’s more, our embedded Josev software solution helps you to get there quicker. By allowing you to leapfrog over technological barriers and offer out-of-the-box advanced capabilities, you have benefits such as:

  • increased revenue: Switch’s advanced uptime diagnostics reduce the number of broken chargers, which lifts network uptime and your return on investment
  • reduced operational costs: real-time data visualisation of the charging process, including Plug & Charge-enabled EVs, allows you to remotely pinpoint, identify and analyse any errors before a charger failure occurs. So your technicians spend less time on the road and more time setting up new networks
  • time saved: deploying our embedded software Josev with a preconfigured charge controller will save you time through reduced implementation complexity, making your network upgrade cost-effective and easy to maintain
  • hacking-proofed: strong data security and automated, authenticated billing that is based on the latest EV communication protocols, co-written by Switch CEO & Founder Marc Mültin, which is native to the Switch platform
  • future-proofed: ISO 15118-2 powered Plug & Charge brings unprecedented customer comfort and opens the door to advanced EV charging capabilities
  • extra income: ISO 15118-20 powered bi-directional charging allows you to generate additional income by turning vehicles into power banks on wheels and profit from energy self-sufficiency with vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-building (V2B) charging capabilities.

All this means that you get a superior product packed with vital advanced next-generation capabilities for businesses who want to leverage their EV charging networks, generate and diversify their revenue portfolio and create a seamless charging experience for the end customer.

The launch of the Switch platform finally opens the door to advanced EV charging capabilities.

Key highlights of 2022

To kick off, Switch successfully showcased the first-ever AC Plug & Charge at the Intercharge Network Conference in Berlin, Germany.

We successfully demonstrated automated and secure charging with chargers by Alfen and Zaptec against cars from Volkswagen, Porsche and Mercedes Benz.

Our packed-out demo showed firsthand our vision and the unique advanced next-generation capabilities that the Switch platform offers, gaining significant traction for its cutting-edge possibilities.

Our solution offers elevated revenue potential through its advanced uptime diagnostics. It reduces the costs of EV charging network operations through real-time data insights. It employs strong data security, is built from the get-go to be massively scalable and future-proofed and allows you to save money and earn extra on bi-directional power flow (V2H / V2B / V2G).

At the Green Auto Summit in Stuttgart, Germany, Marc Mültin delivered a keynote on the importance of ISO 15118-20 and OCPP 2.0.1 (EV communication protocols), which unlock commercial opportunities and advanced technical capabilities for EV charging management on a commercial scale.

Collaborations of 2022

The Switch platform is the only CSMS native to the latest protocols on the market. By combining these, it offers unprecedented insight into the entirety of the charging process — the unique conversation between the electric car to the charger (based on ISO 15118), and the backend (OCPP 2.0.1 / OCPP 2.1) with the grid integration (e.g. Nuvve’s GIVeTM platform). This vertically integrated solution, based on open standards, is essential to tackle the issues customers currently face in a heavily fragmented EV charging ecosystem. Our solution is future-proofed, allowing you to grow and scale your business with ease.

In addition, we created successful collaborations with Zaptec, Alfen and Nuvve. Thanks to our partnership with Nuvve, we can integrate their complementary vehicle-to-grid aggregator platform GIVeTM with the Switch platform to provide grid services like frequency containment reserve (FCR) on a global scale. This cooperation opens the door to an array of services and opportunities that will increase the usage of renewable energy while allowing customers and businesses to benefit financially.

We visited our partners at Nuvve in San Diego, California, to engage in deep dive workshops and build upon our great relationship that will help revolutionise the EV charging ecosystem.

While in the US, we showcased our ISO 15118 powered Plug & Charge capabilities at the CharIN North America Testival in Portland, Oregon.

The global uptake on Plug & Charge proves it is the bedrock for the future of EV charging. It ensures the most convenient charging experience — seamless, as if you were to charge a Tesla — so you can just plug, charge and go. Everything is automatically taken care of and billing is secured and authenticated by digital certificates and transport layer security. This technology suits all charging scenarios, including public charging — as opposed to Autocharge, which is only a sufficient solution for private charging settings like fleets.

We ran our game-changing OCPP 2.0.1 code with great success and managed to showcase its next-generation advanced capabilities at Plugfest, hosted by the Open Charge Alliance in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Our setup was successfully tested against electric vehicles, charging stations and EV charging backend solutions.

This exciting news confirms the viability and the maturity of our product. We offer solutions to real-life problems with REAL benefits across the value chain to the end consumer.

At Switch, we dedicate every day to making electrified transport the prime solution. We bring businesses the ability to create a diversified revenue portfolio and a seamless and superior mobility experience to the end customers — all powered by the Switch platform.

What is Switch doing next?

In 2023, look out for a new update in our Josev product, which will broaden Josev’s reach in the world-at-large. We’ll also be announcing a collaboration with a manufacturer of charge controllers. My team has worked really hard too to secure a number of new customer announcements, as of course the new Switch platform will be launching live with pilot customers in Q1 2023 — as well as some innovative V2G projects in collaboration with our partner Nuvve and EV manufacturers.

As part of our ongoing commitment to doing everything we can to mitigate climate change and to make this world a better place for everyone, we will continue to support the Eden Reforestation Projects. This is a non-profit dedicated to restoring devastated lands across the world and alleviating poverty by creating jobs, and protecting the ecosystems while mitigating climate change.

We will continue to update our FREE-to-all implementation of ISO 15118 called Josev Community. It underpins future EV charging ecosystem capabilities and is core to our full-scale embedded OS for all AC and DC chargers, Josev Professional.

NOW for some exciting news!

We’ll go live with the Switch platform in Q1 2023 in the residential, workplace and public charging sector. As always, we’ll be attending more events, more Plugfests and more CharIN Testivals. We hope to meet you there in person! Oh, and I almost forgot: as part of our educational efforts, we’ll also be hosting more webinars, ISO 15118 training sessions aaaand *drum roll* … I’ll be publishing a new version of the ISO 15118 Manual, including insights on the latest ISO 15118-20 –– free for everyone. So watch this space!

All that is left for me to say is to wish you a healthy and a happy Merry Everything! See you all in 2023.
